What I love about this view from Hole 17 is how quickly your eye can travel.
You begin with the flag and green right in front of you.
Then suddenly you're crossing the Pacific all the way to Molokaʻi.
That's a huge amount of physical distance held inside one frame.
The evening light gave all of those layers enough continuity to stay together while still letting them remain distinct—the green, ocean, clouds and island each doing their own thing.
This is what keeps bringing me back to photographing Kapalua.
The golf course gives me these very precise human-scale reference points—a flag, a bunker, a green—and then Maui puts something enormous behind them.
When the photograph gets large, you can move between both experiences.
See the whole landscape first.
Then walk closer and start noticing the course surfaces, vegetation, water and atmospheric detail.
A little flag can take you all the way to another island.
I think that's pretty fun.
From a flag to another island in a single view.
