Flying into the West Maui Mountains with the doors off is one of those experiences that never gets ordinary.
Cascading Tears came from the Valley of Tears as the light was beginning to fade. What caught me immediately were the waterfalls—these thin streaks of white dropping through an enormous amount of dark, folded terrain.
From below, these mountains can feel almost like a wall. From the helicopter, I could move into them. Suddenly I was seeing ridges behind ridges, watercourses, vegetation and valleys folding into one another.
I wanted to keep that darkness rather than flatten everything into equal brightness. The waterfalls should arrive first.
Then the rest of the mountain can reveal itself.
That becomes especially fun when the photograph gets large. Across the room, you see the falls cutting through this massive landscape. Walk toward it and the dark areas start opening: vegetation, ridge lines, drainage, small changes in texture.
The waterfalls stopped me first.
The valley is what keeps me looking.
The waterfalls arrive first. The valley takes longer.
