Works at Scale is an MFAC program for artworks in which physical scale is part of how the artist intends the work to be experienced.
It begins with unique photographic works by Lance Ehrecke conceived from capture onward for architectural scale.
The image should change as the collector changes distance.

Lance Ehrecke's Works at Scale begin before anything is printed.
The photographs are conceived and constructed for physical size: large fields of information intended to survive when an image grows from something held on a screen into something that occupies an architecture.
The technology matters, but it is not the point.
The point is what becomes possible when the photograph keeps giving the viewer something to see.

Unique work · 1/1
One work. One collector realization.
Lance's photographic Works at Scale are realized once.
They are not accompanied by smaller commercial editions or later reproduced at another collector scale.
The final work is developed with one collector and documented as one unique physical realization.
Technical proofs may be produced solely to evaluate color, fabrication or presentation. They are not offered for sale.
Lance retains a protected archival source master for provenance, conservation, documentation and any replacement procedure expressly defined in the acquisition agreement.
No additional salable physical fine-art realization will be produced.
Wall + Scale Study
Every work begins with the wall.
Scale is developed in relationship to the architecture around it.
MFAC and the artist consider the wall, ceiling height, viewing distance, surrounding materials, access and the way the room is actually used before the final dimensions are established.
The composition remains fixed.
The work scales proportionally.
The goal is not to fill the wall.
It is to find the physical size at which the work becomes itself.
The Physical Work
Made to carry the image.
Lance's current photographic Works at Scale are realized as seamless fine-art pigment Masterprints beneath color-neutral acrylic glass with aluminum Dibond backing.
Each production file is reviewed and proofed before the unique collector work is fabricated.
The presentation was selected because it can carry the amount of information inside these photographs at the physical scale for which they were conceived.

01 — Begin with the space
Tell MFAC which work has stayed with you and where you imagine living with it.
02 — Study the scale
Lance and MFAC review proportions, viewing distance and spatial context and develop an initial visualization.
03 — Fix the project
Once scope, destination and installation requirements are clear, MFAC provides a fixed project proposal before the collector commits.
04 — Proof the work
The production file and physical proof are reviewed before final fabrication.
05 — Realize the work
The unique physical work is fabricated, inspected and prepared for insured transport.
06 — Install it properly
MFAC coordinates with qualified art handlers and appropriate local professionals for the site.
07 — Sign it in place
Lance travels to the completed installation, signs and dates the unique work and completes its provenance record.

The history begins with the first realization.
Each work is documented physically and digitally, establishing its identity, final dimensions and ownership history from the first collector realization.
Pricing
Acquisition begins at $100,000.
Each is developed for a particular space rather than sold from a fixed online configuration.
After the initial Wall + Scale Study, MFAC provides a fixed project proposal covering the agreed artwork, scale, fabrication, insured delivery, professional installation coordination, Lance's onsite signing and provenance documentation.
Extraordinary structural work, specialized rigging, unusual access, customs or other exceptional site requirements are identified before the proposal is finalized.
Final pricing is established before commitment after the scale, destination, access and installation requirements of the project are understood.

The Sitting Stone
The idea that may eventually define Works at Scale began with Lance sitting still.
During a period of burnout, he spent long stretches on Maui's Hāna side simply taking in what was around him.
The experience did not unfold as one grand view.
It arrived gradually.
Small plants near his feet.
The ground immediately around him.
Vegetation.
Water.
Weather.
Distance.
The island of Hawaiʻi on the horizon.
The longer he stayed, the more there was to notice.
The Sitting Stone is Lance's continuing attempt to build a photograph capable of asking the viewer for that same kind of attention.

Sometimes the wall comes first.
A site-specific Work at Scale begins with a place, wall or idea rather than an existing image.
Lance can develop a new photographic work in response to the collector's architecture and connection to place—from capture and construction through final physical scale and installation.
The composition is created as a new work rather than cropping an existing photograph to fit a wall.
