I knew Olowalu from the ground long before I saw it this way.
What caught me from the air was how much of the place suddenly fit together. The reef wasn’t separate from the shoreline anymore. The coastline led straight into the folds of the valley, and all these pieces I had experienced individually became one landscape.
That’s what I wanted to hold onto.
I built the panorama so you could first see Olowalu as a whole, then keep finding smaller things as you move closer—the shapes in the reef, changes in the water, roads, trees and all those folds disappearing back into the valley.
That’s probably my favorite thing about making a photograph this large. From across a room you see one place. Walk toward it and suddenly you’re exploring it.

Olowalu Revealed is an aerial panoramic photograph made above Olowalu Landing on West Maui, from a position where reef, shoreline, lowlands, and Olowalu Valley can be held inside one field. Offshore, shallow water and reef divide into changing shapes and colors. Closer to land, the coast forms another visual layer; behind it, the valley rises into a deeply folded system of ridges.
The aerial position reorganizes relationships that are difficult to experience simultaneously from the ground. Reef becomes geometry, water depth becomes color, and the coastline becomes a dividing line; the valley reads as nested forms rather than a single mountain wall. Lance Ehrecke constructed the photograph to preserve that breadth while retaining enough information for large physical presentation. From across a room the panorama reads as one West Maui landscape; closer viewing separates reef structure, shoreline, buildings, and ridges into distinct places inside the larger composition.
In the home. The 3:1 proportion is meant for a long wall—living room, dining, hallway, or lanai-facing interior—where the eye can travel the coast. On a narrow wall the panorama will dominate; give it width and viewing distance.
