Maui Mirage began at Sugar Beach in Kīhei during sunset, but Lance deliberately moved the camera away from literal description.
During the exposure, he panned through the scene.
Water, reflected light and horizon began stretching into horizontal bands of yellow, orange, magenta and darker tones.
The distant form of Kahoʻolawe remains just recognizable enough to keep the image connected to the actual place.
The process is important because it reverses the logic of Lance's panoramic work.
His constructed panoramas add exposures and resolution in order to preserve more information.
Maui Mirage removes information.
Edges disappear. Surface texture becomes gesture. Familiar landscape becomes something closer to memory than documentation.
The finished print is therefore not about microscopic sharpness.
Its technical quality lies in how cleanly those intentional transitions reproduce—the depth of color, subtle variations within the movement and continuity of directional streaks throughout the image.
