I know Keawakapu from the shore, but this view from above changes the whole arrangement. Water takes up most of the photograph. You can see darker shapes beneath its turquoise surface, then a thin, white edge of surf, then the long stretch of sand. Along the far side, the palms and little signs of beach life bring everything back to a human scale.
What I like is the unevenness. The ocean isn’t a single flat color; the shallows are full of texture and changes in depth. The surf doesn’t draw a perfectly straight border. Even the beach, which looks so clean from far away, has small interruptions when you start exploring it.
From the ground, you might remember a day here through one patch of shade or one step into the water. From the air, I can hold the whole meeting of land and sea at once. I made this photograph for that shift in perspective, and for all the small evidence of a real day inside it.
From the air, I can hold the whole meeting of land and sea at once.
