This is Mauna Loa during the December 2022 eruption, seen from Mauna Kea. In this frame, I keep coming back to the sky. The volcanic glow climbs into a huge, irregular cloud, while the surrounding night still holds its deep violet color and a scattering of stars.
There is a thin line of lava lower in the photograph, and then this enormous illuminated form above it. My eye travels between those two scales. One traces a path across the land; the other shows how far the light can reach into the atmosphere. The dark ridge at the bottom gives all that color somewhere to begin.
An eruption is easy to reduce to one blazing orange shape. I wanted more of the strange relationships that were there: fire and cloud, ground and sky, motion and the still points of light overhead. The scene was changing in front of the camera. The photograph lets me stay with one arrangement long enough to notice how much was happening at once.
