Coastal Layers was made high above Maui’s north shore near Waiheʻe, where distance compresses ocean, shoreline, vegetation and folded inland terrain into overlapping bands. From this elevation, the coast can initially read almost as abstraction: large areas of color, long boundaries and stacked layers replace the more familiar eye-level experience of beach and mountain. The place remains specific, but the aerial perspective reorganizes it.
Lance Ehrecke uses the height of the camera to simplify the composition without discarding the information inside it. Individual shoreline rocks, variations across the water, vegetation and fine changes in the land remain present in the source image. That relationship between broad geometry and close detail is important to the work. From across a room the photograph is primarily about layers, distance and color; at larger scale and closer viewing, the landscape begins to rebuild itself from the details preserved inside those forms.
Coastal Layers is available as an open edition photographic artwork, produced to order in the selected size and presentation. Acrylic, Aluminum and Canvas are currently offered, with framing choices dependent on the selected presentation. The presentation guide explains how surface, edge and reflectivity change the finished object.
