Aqua Elegance isolates one of the Pacific's most recognizable forms: the tail of a humpback whale lifting above the surface before disappearing beneath it.
Rather than surrounding the whale with a broad seascape, Lance narrowed the composition until the fluke and moving water carried almost everything.
The monochromatic treatment is intentional.
Removing most color shifts attention toward the irregular edge of the whale's tail, changing reflectivity across the ocean surface and the contrast between the animal's solid form and the water moving around it.
That restraint makes Aqua Elegance unusual within Lance's larger body of work.
Many of his photographs expand the field through aerial access, panoramic construction or extreme scale.
This one does nearly the opposite.
It reduces the field until one fleeting gesture becomes enough.
The finished print preserves fine surface information throughout both whale and water while allowing the overall composition to remain clean and graphic from farther away.
