Maui Mirage was created at Sugar Beach in Kīhei during sunset using intentional camera movement. Rather than freeze the shoreline, water and horizon, Lance Ehrecke panned the camera through the exposure. Yellow, burnt orange, magenta and darker tones stretch into horizontal bands, while the distant form of Kahoʻolawe remains just recognizable enough to keep the image connected to the actual South Maui setting.

The process reverses the logic of Lance’s constructed panoramas. In those works, multiple exposures and high resolution are used to preserve more information. Here, information is deliberately removed. Edges disappear, surface texture becomes gesture and the familiar landscape moves toward memory rather than documentation. The square composition relies on the quality of those intentional transitions—the continuity of directional movement, separation of color and smaller variations that become easier to see when the work is physically enlarged.

Maui Mirage is an open edition photographic artwork available in square sizes and produced to order.
