Sunset’s Gateway looks outward from Hole 1 of Kapalua’s Plantation Course near the end of the day. Its vertical format distinguishes it from many of Lance Ehrecke’s wider golf landscapes. Instead of spreading the environment horizontally, the photograph stacks the course, green, Pacific, Molokaʻi and changing evening sky into a sequence that moves upward and outward from the foreground.

The perspective gives the opening hole the feeling of sitting inside a much larger northwest Maui landscape rather than existing as a self-contained golf view. Lance is interested in images where camera position changes hierarchy: the green remains important, but it becomes one part of a relationship between designed ground, weather, ocean and distant island. At larger physical sizes, fine information across the course and sky makes these layers increasingly distinct while preserving the immediate vertical composition.

Sunset’s Gateway is offered as an open edition photographic artwork and produced to order. Current presentation choices include Acrylic, Aluminum and Canvas, with sizes and framing options listed in the configurator. Compare presentation surfaces and frame profiles before selecting the finished work. The vertical orientation makes it particularly distinctive within Lance’s broader Kapalua body of work.

Sunset's Gateway

I usually love going wide, but this scene on Hole 1 at Kapalua wanted to go vertical.

The course begins at the bottom, the green sits farther into the landscape, then the Pacific and Molokaʻi carry the view outward while the evening sky pulls everything upward.

It creates this stack of distances that I really enjoy.

The golf course is present, but it doesn't own the photograph.

It feels more like a doorway into everything beyond it.

That's something I'm always looking for—how can I photograph a familiar place in a way that changes what gets your attention?

Here, the green is important because it gives the eye somewhere to begin.

Then the landscape just keeps going.

When the work is printed large, those layers stay active. Course details remain visible while ocean, island and sky continue operating at completely different scales.

The first hole starts the photograph.

It doesn't finish it.
