Moana’s Harmony was photographed from a catamaran in the Pacific between Maui and Lānaʻi, with the camera turned away from the island and into open water. Removing coastline and mountain from the frame changes the way scale is understood. Deep blue water shifts toward lighter blue and white wherever the moving surface catches the light, allowing color, depth and reflection to carry the composition.

The photograph approaches abstraction through viewpoint rather than digital manipulation. Lance Ehrecke is interested in moments when changing the camera position changes what the subject becomes. Here, Maui remains nearby but no longer needs to appear in the image. At larger scale, what first looks like a broad field of blue becomes increasingly complex: fine ripples, localized highlights and tonal changes remain visible throughout the water. The closer encounter reveals how active the surface was when the photograph was made.

Moana’s Harmony is offered as an open edition photographic artwork and produced to order in the selected size and presentation. Current choices include Acrylic, Aluminum and Canvas, with framing available according to configuration. Compare presentations to understand how each surface changes depth, texture and reflected light.

Moana's Harmony

We were offshore from West Maui when I turned the camera away from the island.

That sounds simple, but it completely changed the photograph.

Without mountains or shoreline organizing the scene, the Pacific had to carry everything.

Deep blue shifted into lighter passages wherever the moving surface caught the light. Waves became shape. Reflections became structure. The ocean stopped functioning as the thing around the subject and became the subject itself.

I love moments like this because they remind me how little it can take to see something differently.

Sometimes the "new perspective" is a helicopter or a drone.

Sometimes it's just turning around.

From across a room, Moana's Harmony reads as a broad blue field.

Come closer and the water gets increasingly busy—waves, highlights and small variations appearing everywhere.

Maui was right behind me when I made it.

It didn't need to be in the frame.
