I've photographed Hole 18 at Kapalua more than once because the place keeps changing.
At twilight, the green sits near the center of the scene while the clubhouse, vegetation, Pacific and Molokaʻi stack behind it.
What I like is that none of those elements has to disappear for the others to work.
The course is designed.
The clubhouse is architectural.
The vegetation has its own texture.
Then the ocean and distant island stretch the photograph into a completely different scale.
Evening light holds all of it together.
From across a room, the scene reads immediately as Kapalua.
Come closer and it starts breaking into parts—the course surfaces, architecture, vegetation, water, atmosphere and distant land each becoming more specific.
That progression matters to me.
I want the photograph to work when you first enter the room.
But I don't want that first look to finish it.

Twilight Triumph returns to Hole 18 of Kapalua’s Plantation Course near sunset. The green occupies the immediate visual center while the clubhouse creates a strong architectural element through the middle distance. Beyond both, the Pacific and Molokaʻi extend the photograph into a much larger geographic field under changing evening light.
The photograph is most useful as more than an identification of a famous golf hole. Designed green, clubhouse architecture, vegetation, ocean, island and sky occupy different distances inside the same frame, and twilight light provides continuity without erasing those differences. Lance Ehrecke’s source image preserves the separate layers well enough for larger presentation. From across a room the work reads as a broad Kapalua scene; closer viewing reveals more specific course surfaces, architecture, vegetation and distant landscape.
