The first light begins touching the property, Molokaʻi is sitting way out on the horizon, and you can see the fairway, vegetation, clubhouse, ocean and distant island all occupying different layers inside the same view.
That depth is what interested me.
I didn't want Hole 18 isolated from everything around it.
One of the things I love about photographing Kapalua is that the golf course is only one part of a much larger landscape.
People shaped the fairway.
Nobody shaped the Pacific or Molokaʻi behind it.
The panoramic format gave all of those layers room without forcing one of them to become merely background.
From across the room, you get the whole place.
Walk closer and the smaller course and architectural details start returning.
That's when the photograph stops being only a sunrise and starts becoming somewhere you can explore.
Hole 18 is only one layer of the view.

Sunrise Majesty looks across Hole 18 of Kapalua’s Plantation Course as first light begins to define the property. Molokaʻi sits along the distant horizon while fairway, vegetation and clubhouse occupy distinct layers through the middle of the panoramic frame. Rather than isolate the finishing hole as a golf subject, Lance Ehrecke places the designed course inside northwest Maui’s larger geography.
That relationship between designed and natural systems is central to Lance’s Kapalua work. The course is shaped and maintained; the surrounding Pacific, island, topography and weather are not. The panoramic construction gives those layers room to remain separate while preserving small course and architectural features across the image. At larger physical size, the work continues to reward close viewing after the first impression of sunrise, with details inside the course, vegetation and distant landscape staying visually active.
