Most photographers—me included—love chasing dramatic sunrise and sunset light.
This photograph reminded me how much there is to see in the middle of the day.
Hole 12 at Kapalua was sitting in strong sunlight, and everything was incredibly clear: the fairway, green, Norfolk pines, Pacific and Molokaʻi beyond it.
What caught my attention was how many different landscapes were stacked into one view.
A golf course is completely intentional—graded contours, greens, bunkers, sightlines.
Then it sits inside this much larger Maui landscape that nobody designed.
Mountain. Trees. Ocean. Another island.
I like that tension.
When the photograph gets large, those layers remain separate enough to explore—the textures of the course, vegetation, water and the distant land.
The course matters.
But I never want the larger place around it to become scenery.
A designed landscape sitting inside something much bigger.

Serenade in the Sun looks across Hole 12 of Kapalua’s Plantation Course in strong midday light. The fairway and green read clearly, Norfolk pines establish vertical structure through the middle distance, and the Pacific with Molokaʻi beyond pushes the view much farther outward. The photograph is part of Lance Ehrecke’s long-running study of Kapalua Golf as both designed ground and Maui landscape.
Midday conditions give this work a different character from Lance’s sunrise and sunset photographs of the property. The course is highly intentional—graded contours, bunkers, greens and sightlines—yet it sits inside a much larger system of slopes, trees, ocean, island and weather. The source information preserves those layers separately enough for substantial enlargement. At larger physical scale, course surfaces, vegetation and distant geography remain individually legible instead of collapsing into a generalized resort scene.
