What caught my eye here was the difference between what stayed still and what wouldn't.
The lava along the South Maui coast was completely solid while the water kept moving around it. By lengthening the exposure, I could put several seconds of that movement into a single photograph.
The rocks stay sharp and physical.
The water starts becoming something else.
I also love the quieter palette in this piece. There's blue and gray, muted orange, a little rust—nothing is screaming for attention.
That restraint lets the difference between rock and water become the real story.
Photography is funny this way. We tend to think of a photograph as one instant, but it doesn't have to be.

Misty Twilight was photographed along the Wailea Boardwalk in South Maui using a longer exposure that records several seconds of coastal movement inside a single image. Dark lava retains a comparatively hard edge while moving water softens around it. The ocean and clouds lose some immediate surface detail as well, creating a quieter relationship between stable rock, changing water and the last light of evening.
The restrained palette is part of the photograph’s character. Muted blue, cool gray, pastel orange and warmer rust replace the saturated color often associated with sunset imagery. Lance Ehrecke uses exposure time here rather than camera movement to change the appearance of the coast. At larger print sizes, subtle rock texture and smooth gradations within the water remain visible, making the contrast between what stayed still and what moved increasingly apparent.
