Wailea was beautiful that evening, but I didn't want another literal sunset photograph.
So I moved the camera.
During the exposure, the shoreline, water and sky began stretching into bands. Edges disappeared. Individual objects stopped mattering. What remained was the movement of the camera through the fading light.
I love experimenting like this because it pushes against one of my other photographic instincts.
A lot of my work is about preserving ridiculous amounts of information—stitching frames together, building huge files, making photographs you can keep walking into.
Evening Embrace goes the other direction.
Instead of asking, "How much can I show?" I was asking, "How much can disappear before the feeling of the place disappears with it?"
There isn't a hidden palm tree waiting for you at 200% magnification.
The detail is in the transitions: the narrow bands of color, the soft shifts in tone, the evidence of movement across the frame.
It's still Wailea.
Just remembered differently.

Evening Embrace began at Wailea Beach, Maui, but the finished image deliberately moves away from literal landscape description. Lance Ehrecke used intentional camera movement during the exposure, allowing shoreline, ocean, horizon and evening sky to stretch into horizontal bands. The colors come from the actual light of Wailea, while the camera movement removes the fixed edges the eye would normally use to identify the scene.
This technique places the work at the more abstract end of Lance’s photographic practice. Instead of adding frames and resolution to preserve more information, he lets recognizable information dissolve until movement, rhythm and color become the primary structure. The finished photograph is therefore not about microscopic sharpness. Its technical character lies in the fidelity of transitions across the image: subtle gradations, directional streaks and clean separation between bands of evening color. The work remains photographic, but the camera records the experience differently from ordinary sight.
Evening Embrace is offered as an open edition photographic artwork in multiple sizes.
