Sometimes I'm drawn to huge landscapes. Other times, one small moment is enough.
Aqua Elegance is one of those.
A humpback lifted its tail above the Pacific for only a moment before disappearing again. I kept the composition tight because I didn't want anything competing with that gesture—the curve of the fluke, the water falling away from it, and the surface moving underneath.
Removing most of the color changed the photograph again. Suddenly I was paying more attention to shape, texture and reflected light than to the blue of the ocean.
I love that this image works almost opposite to my large panoramas. There's no enormous field to explore. No hundred-million-pixel landscape unfolding across a wall. It's quiet and concentrated.
But look closely and there's still plenty happening—the irregular edge of the tail, light catching the water, the changing surface around this massive animal.
For me, the simplicity is what gives the moment its strength.

Aqua Elegance isolates the tail of a humpback whale lifting above the Pacific near Lahaina, West Maui. Rather than placing the whale inside a broad seascape, the panoramic composition stays close to the fluke and the moving water around it. The monochromatic treatment removes most color so form, reflected light and texture become more prominent: the uneven edge of the tail, the contrast between animal and ocean, and the shifting surface of the water carry the photograph.
The work is deliberately restrained compared with Lance Ehrecke’s wider aerial and panoramic landscapes. Its long horizontal proportion concentrates attention on one fleeting marine gesture while preserving fine information across both whale and water. From farther away, the image reads as a clean black-and-white statement; closer viewing reveals surface texture, water movement and subtle tonal variation.
