One of the best ways I've found to understand the West Maui Mountains is to leave Maui.
I made this photograph from a catamaran offshore, looking back toward the island.
From land, you experience these mountains one ridge or valley at a time.
Out on the water, enough distance opens up that the whole system starts connecting.
Peaks join together. Valleys become folds. Launiupoko stops feeling like one isolated place and becomes part of this enormous continuous mountain face.
That view stopped me.
The panorama contains more than 265 million pixels because I wanted to preserve both experiences—the mountains as one huge structure and the smaller landscapes nested inside them.
Across the room, you see the range.
Walk closer and ridges separate, vegetation appears, shadows begin defining valleys and the mountain starts breaking into smaller worlds.
Sometimes you have to move farther away to finally see how something fits together.

West Maui Mountain Majesty was photographed from a catamaran offshore, looking back toward Launiupoko Valley and the West Maui Mountains near Lahaina. Moving away from land changes the way the mountain range is understood. Individual peaks begin to connect into one broad system of ridges and valleys, with the distance across the ocean allowing the entire folded mountain face to read together.
Lance Ehrecke kept the palette comparatively restrained so topography could carry more of the composition. The panorama contains more than 265 million pixels, preserving fine structure across an enormous landscape. From a normal viewing distance, the mountains read as one broad form. At larger scale and closer range, smaller ridges, vegetation, shadow lines and folds within Launiupoko Valley begin separating from the whole. The work is an example of distance being used not to simplify a place permanently, but to reveal how its parts connect.
