At first glance, this one is almost nothing but blue.
That's exactly why I liked it.
Early morning light was moving across the Pacific, and the longer I watched the surface, the more variation I started seeing—deep indigo, brighter blue, little flashes of warmer reflected light, small waves constantly changing the texture.
There wasn't a dramatic landmark competing for attention.
Just water.
The source file holds around 96 million pixels, so when this photograph gets large, that apparently simple field starts revealing a ridiculous amount of activity.
From across the room, it feels quiet.
Walk toward it and the ocean gets busy.
Individual waves appear. Highlights separate. Colors that first seemed almost identical start moving away from each other.
I love that reversal.

Seaside Reflections stays almost entirely with the surface of the Pacific near Lahaina, West Maui, during early morning light. Rather than relying on coastline, mountain or a prominent horizon to establish place, the photograph is organized by reflection. Deep blue and indigo meet smaller passages of warmer color as the changing angle of the water turns toward and away from the morning sky.
The composition can appear minimal from a distance, but the source file contains substantial structure throughout the water. At approximately 96 megapixels, small waves, reflected highlights, tonal shifts and changes in surface direction remain present across the image. Lance Ehrecke uses that information to let physical scale change the viewing experience: broad color and movement arrive first; closer viewing reveals the ocean becoming increasingly active.
