I built Monochromatic Majesty from twelve separate photographs across Kapalua's Plantation Course.
Then I took the color away.
That completely changed what I noticed.
Kapalua naturally gives you so much green and blue that color can dominate the experience before you've really looked at the structure underneath it.
In black and white, the fairway contours come forward. Clouds carry more weight. The green, vegetation and distant Molokaʻi start relating through shape, light and tone instead.
The twelve-frame panorama also gave me something a single photograph couldn't: a huge field of view without giving up the little things inside it.
From across the room, it reads as one sweeping monochromatic landscape.
Get close and the small stuff is still there—the flag, changes in the fairway, vegetation, details tucked throughout the course.
I didn't remove the color because the color wasn't beautiful.
I removed it because I wanted to see what was left when it stopped doing all the talking.
Take away the color, and the structure steps forward.

Monochromatic Majesty is a 12-frame panoramic photograph of Hole 5 at Kapalua’s Plantation Course in northwest Maui. Lance Ehrecke constructed the panorama from separate exposures to hold a much wider field of view than a conventional single frame while retaining fine information throughout the course, clouds and distant Molokaʻi. He then removed the familiar green-and-blue palette, shifting attention toward contour, shadow, tone and spatial relationship.
The black-and-white treatment changes which details arrive first. Fairway shape, cloud structure and the course’s smaller features become more prominent without color leading the composition. At approximately 110 megapixels, the finished panorama supports significant enlargement: the green and flag remain small within the total view but continue to resolve as a collector moves closer. The work connects Lance’s interest in panoramic construction with his long-running photographic study of Kapalua Golf.
This open edition photographic artwork is produced to order in the sizes and presentation options shown on the product page. Current choices include Acrylic, Aluminum and Canvas, with framing dependent on presentation.
