I pointed the camera at almost nothing but water.
No mountain. No dramatic coastline. No obvious Maui landmark telling you where you are.
Just the Pacific.
And the longer I watched it, the less simple it became.
Different angles of the surface were catching completely different shades of blue. Small waves were changing texture constantly. Bright reflections appeared beside deep, quiet passages and then disappeared again.
That's what interested me.
When the ocean loses its role as "background," you start seeing how much is actually happening there.
From across a room, Liquid Harmony reads as one broad field of blue and movement.
Walk toward it and the calm starts breaking apart. Individual waves, reflected light and subtle color changes begin appearing everywhere.
Sometimes changing perspective means getting into a helicopter.
Sometimes it just means deciding that the thing you normally look past is actually the subject.

Liquid Harmony was photographed on the Pacific between Maui and Lānaʻi, with almost every conventional landscape reference removed from the frame. There is no prominent shoreline, mountain or horizon organizing the view. Instead, the water itself becomes the structure: changing angles of reflected light create different blue values, small waves alter the surface, and darker passages sit beside brighter highlights and finer ripple patterns.
The reduction moves the photograph toward abstraction without leaving observation behind. Lance Ehrecke is interested in what happens when the camera stops treating the ocean as background and makes it the entire subject. At a distance, the image reads as a broad blue field; closer viewing reveals considerably more movement and variation. The source file preserves those small tonal and surface changes, allowing the finished work to become more active as the viewer approaches rather than resolving all at once.
