Golden Hour Glory

On Hole 18 at Kapalua, the flag gives this photograph one very precise point to hold onto. The sun is just behind it, breaking into rays, while the green catches the last warm light and the line of Norfolk pines cuts across the water beyond. I kept the flag large in the frame. That lets a small, familiar object stand against a much wider evening sky. Follow the course away from it and the shapes soften: the fairway, the bunkers, the trees, then the distant island at the edge of the light. None of those distances feels quite the same once the sun drops low. What I enjoy about photographing Kapalua is that the designed landscape can give you a starting point without containing the whole experience. Here, the flag starts the story. The light takes it somewhere else. The photograph holds that brief alignment of a place people know well and a sky that won’t repeat itself.
