Sunset's Gateway looks outward from Hole 1 of Kapalua's Plantation Course near the end of the day.
The vertical format distinguishes it from many of Lance's wider Kapalua photographs.
Instead of spreading the environment horizontally, the composition stacks information upward and outward: the course in the foreground, the green beyond it, changing light in the sky, then ocean and Molokaʻi.
The perspective gives the opening hole the feeling of sitting inside a much larger landscape rather than existing as a self-contained course view.
Lance is interested in photographs where position changes hierarchy.
The green remains important, but it is not the entire subject.
It becomes one part of the relationship between designed land, weather, ocean and distant island.
At larger scale, fine information throughout the course and sky makes those layers increasingly distinct.
