Ephemeral Majesty was photographed from Maui Meadows above South Maui as brilliant evening light met a much darker mass of cloud.
The photograph is built around that contrast.
Near the horizon, white and yellow light pushes through intensely. Higher in the frame, the weather turns cooler—blue, violet and gray spreading across the underside of the cloud cover.
A single palm interrupts the foreground and gives the much larger atmospheric event a simple point of reference.
Lance was drawn less to the idea of "a beautiful sunset" than to the temporary structure of the light: how a narrow opening near the horizon could illuminate a much larger weather system above it.
That specificity is what the high-resolution file preserves.
At normal screen size, the photograph reads immediately through the bright horizon and dark cloud mass.
In a larger print, the quieter tonal differences inside those clouds become much more apparent, allowing the atmosphere itself to carry considerably more of the photograph.
