Another Day In Paradise looks down on Kalepolepo Beach in Kīhei from an elevated perspective that reorganizes a familiar stretch of South Maui coast.
From shore, the scene is experienced horizontally: sand, water, reef and horizon.
From above, those same elements separate into shapes and tonal zones. Pale sand meets translucent shallows, darker reef interrupts the water, and changing depth creates additional structure that is easy to miss at eye level.
That shift in perspective is one of the recurring ideas in Lance's work. He is less interested in simply documenting a recognizable Maui location than in finding the camera position that reveals something about it ordinary sight does not.
The aerial vantage turns Kalepolepo into color, geometry and surface while preserving enough recognizable information to keep the photograph anchored to the actual place.
Produced at larger scale, the work rewards two distances: the broad coastal composition from across the room and the smaller shoreline, reef and water information that emerges as the viewer approaches.
