West Maui Mountain Majesty reverses the direction from which Lance usually experiences the ocean.
Instead of photographing outward from Maui, he photographed back toward the island from a catamaran offshore.
That distance allows the West Maui Mountains to be read as a connected system of ridges rather than a sequence of individual peaks.
Lance kept the palette comparatively restrained so topography could carry more of the composition.
The panorama contains more than 265 million pixels, preserving fine structure across an enormous mountain face.
At normal viewing distance, the range reads as a broad folded form.
As the finished print becomes larger and the viewer moves closer, smaller ridges, shadow lines, vegetation and the folds inside Launiupoko Valley begin separating from the whole.
That relationship between broad visual impact and close information is increasingly central to Lance's large-scale photographic practice.
