We love to venture off the beaten path as well! Let's create something truly inspiring together.
Evening Embrace began with a sunset at Wailea Beach, but Lance did not want the finished photograph to describe every object in front of the camera.
Instead, he moved the camera intentionally during the exposure.
That movement allows shoreline, ocean, horizon and evening sky to lose their fixed edges and stretch into horizontal fields of color.
The photograph remains tied to the actual light and palette of the place, but the camera no longer records the landscape the way the eye would normally freeze it.
This places Evening Embrace at the opposite end of Lance's practice from his extreme-resolution panoramas.
In one direction, he constructs photographs containing more information than a conventional single frame can hold.
Here, he deliberately lets information disappear until movement, rhythm and color become the subject.
The finished print is not intended to reveal hidden sharp details. Its quality lies in the fidelity of those transitions—the subtle gradations, directional movement and clean separation between bands of color across the entire image.
