We love to venture off the beaten path as well! Let's create something truly inspiring together.
Skyward Spectacular was photographed from a doors-off helicopter at Honokōhau Falls in the West Maui Mountains.
The unusual access determines the entire composition.
From below, a waterfall of this scale is experienced primarily through height.
From the air, the camera can move closer to the upper cascade and look across the face of the cliffs.
The photograph therefore reveals relationships that are difficult to understand from the ground: where the water emerges, how it cuts into the terrain and how surrounding vegetation occupies the steep rock structure.
Only part of the larger waterfall system is visible inside the frame, making the surrounding cliff an important reference for scale.
The high-resolution source file retains fine information in water, rock and vegetation throughout the vertical composition.
At larger print sizes, those smaller structures begin separating from what initially reads as one dramatic drop.
The image becomes less about "a waterfall" and more about the terrain the water is moving through.
