Cascading Tears was photographed from a doors-off helicopter over the Valley of Tears in the West Maui Mountains.
That access changes the photograph completely.
From the ground, the mountains are primarily experienced as a wall rising upward.
From the air, Lance could move into the terrain and look across multiple folds of the valley at once. Narrow waterfalls descend through the darker mountain structure, appearing almost like bright lines drawn across the landscape.
The scene was photographed in fading light, leaving much of the surrounding valley comparatively dark.
Rather than lifting every shadow into uniform brightness, the image preserves that contrast: the white water remains immediately legible while smaller ridges, vegetation and drainage lines wait inside the darker areas.
This is where resolution becomes important.
Cascading Tears is not intended only to read as "waterfalls in mountains."
At substantial physical scale, the surrounding terrain begins to separate into many smaller structures.
The closer someone moves toward the print, the more complex the valley becomes.
