Flying toward Honokōhau Falls with the helicopter doors off is hard to forget.
What surprised me most wasn't just the height of the waterfall.
It was everything around it.
From below, a waterfall like this tends to dominate the whole experience. From the air, I could move across the cliff face and suddenly see where the water was traveling through this enormous amount of rock and vegetation.
The falls became one part of the mountain rather than the entire subject.
That's what I wanted the photograph to keep.
From across the room, your eye goes right to the white line of water.
Then get closer.
Rock begins separating. Vegetation appears on slopes that look almost impossible to hold onto. Smaller structures inside the cliff start becoming as interesting as the waterfall itself.
I went up there expecting to photograph water.
I came back fascinated by the mountain carrying it.
The waterfall is only one line inside the mountain.
