Moana's Harmony was photographed from a catamaran off West Maui, looking into the Pacific rather than back toward the island.
That orientation removes many of the cues that normally establish landscape scale.
There is little coastline to explain where the viewer is.
Instead, deep blue water moves toward lighter blue and white as the changing surface catches the light.
The result approaches abstraction through perspective rather than digital manipulation.
Lance is interested in moments when changing where the camera is positioned changes what the subject becomes.
Maui remains nearby, but the photograph is no longer really about Maui's coastline.
It is about water experienced from within the ocean itself—color, movement, depth and reflected light.
At large scale, the apparently simple blue field becomes much more complex. Fine ripples, tonal shifts and localized highlights remain present throughout the source image, giving the final print more visual activity the closer someone moves toward it.
