Over the Edge looks down the Nā Pali Coast from an aerial position near Honopū Beach on Kauaʻi. From the water or trail, these cliffs are primarily experienced as enormous vertical walls. From above, their spatial organization changes: green ridges separate into long folds, valleys open between them and small beaches become useful markers of scale along the coastline below.
The photograph is less about repeating an iconic view of Nā Pali than about revealing a relationship that is difficult to understand from conventional viewpoints. At approximately 80 megapixels, the source image retains fine information across an unusually complex landscape, including vegetation, ridge texture, beaches and coastline. That allows the photograph to support substantial enlargement while preserving the tension between the immense total scene and the smaller physical features embedded within it. Although made on Kauaʻi, the work belongs clearly within Lance Ehrecke’s broader practice of using unusual access to change how a familiar place is seen.
Over the Edge is offered as an open edition photographic artwork and produced to order. Current presentation choices include Acrylic, Aluminum and Canvas, with size and framing combinations listed in the configurator.
