pono
Pono

Pono is an original sculpture by Avi Molinas, made entirely of koa wood. Avi uses the Hawaiian word pono to mean balance, and the sculpture is built around balance, sharing and power.

The base is curly koa, its texture almost three-dimensional, its color moving from golden to brown and dark brown. The koa also carries watermarks, which Avi values most: he says the wood touched the ground and is connected to the ʻāina. Pieces are added to the sculpture in balance. One of them has pukas, holes that Avi describes as a filter: they split what you have to different people, shared with balance.

In the middle, holding the piece, is a koa element that evokes hau, the wood used for hula skirts, which is cured in the ocean to make the fabric. He sees it as the connection between the wood and the ocean. One central piece is shaped like a hammer and can be lifted out and held; Avi says it stands for power, alongside balance and sharing. He invites people to touch the sculpture and remove the pieces.

This is a unique original, one sculpture, available through Maui Fine Art Collective.
