maka-ainana-the-commoner
Makaʻāinana | The Commoner

Makaʻāinana | The Commoner is an original sculpture by Avi Molinas, carved from Milo wood from Maui. The figure represents the commoner, a regular person: the face and nose, with two hands holding the head.

The title pairs the Hawaiian word makaʻāinana (commoner; the people in general) with its English name. Milo (Thespesia populnea) is a hardwood that Avi describes as nearly as strong as Koa.

Avi spent three to four months on the piece. He finishes his sculpture with oil rather than varnish, so the wood can be touched and felt; this work carries 12 to 18 coats of oil over a 3,000-grit surface.

This is a unique original, one sculpture, available through Maui Fine Art Collective.
