The fisherman has grown in importance within Avi’s work and has become personally important to him. His family comes from fishermen, and he came to Maui to connect with the ocean and its people; he sees the fisherman as the connection between the land, the people and the ʻāina.

The figure shows two hands and a head at the top, then two arms whose hands read as fins or as a canoe paddle. On the back are two family members, head and body, their bodies marked with triangles. Avi describes the triangles as shark teeth: good luck for the fisherman and the people, and protection from the ocean.

Kou (Cordia subcordata) is a wood Avi notes Hawaiians have used for tools and bowls. After three to four months of carving, sometimes longer, the work was finished with 16 to 20 coats of oil and sanded to 3,000 grit. Avi invites people to touch the work.

This is a unique original, one sculpture, available through Maui Fine Art Collective.
